I still can’t believe this! All this hype for something so ridiculous! Who cares about an MP3 player? I want something new! I want them to think differently!

Any way you spin this it is:
1. Not revolutionary. Big capacity mp3 players already exist. With Creative Labs’ entrance into the firewire arena, future nomads will have similar specs and better prices.
2. A bad fit. This product is outside Apple’s core competancy – computing devices. When many are calling for a pda, they release an MP3 player.
3. Without a future. This Christmas you will see mp3 players be commoditized. Meaning that the players from Korea will be way less expensive tha iPod. The real money is in DRM and distribution (ala Real Musicnet). If Apple were smart they would be focusing on high gross revenue from services rather than a playback device.– Meetoo
Questi sono alcuni dei commenti (negativi) apparsi sul forum di MacRumors il 23 Ottobre 2001, poco dopo l’annuncio da parte di Apple del primo iPod.
Un device che non faceva nulla di nuovo o particolarmente innovativo, ma lo faceva in pieno stile Apple: una bella estetica, funzionava bene, era facile da usare e da gestire (grazie al sync automatico con iTunes 2 e la possibilità di organizzare la musica per metadati e non per cartelle).
Poi, sappiamo tutti come è andata a finire: l’iPod ha portato Apple nel mondo della musica, diventando il prodotto più venduto del settore, è sopravvisuto indenne per più di 12 anni, fino a quando non è stato cannibalizzato dall’iPhone. Senza l’iPod, Apple non avrebbe partecipato alla rivoluzione della fruizione della musica e della vendita della stessa con l’iTunes Music Store.
